Frankie Manning's remarkable life was celebrated for 5 days in New York City by over 2000 swing dancers. Most of us who were fortunate to be there felt the event was one of the high points of our lives. Here are some of the items that were made for that event and in tribute to Frankie Manning.
Profits made from the event and from the sales of these items will go to the Frankie Manning Legacy Fund.* Two of the items, the book and the Savoy Ballroom art reproduction are offered to you as premiums for your donation to the Frankie Manning Legacy Fund, a fund that will be used to carry out some of Frankie Manning's dreams for the recognition and continuation of Lindy Hop.
*About the Frankie Manning Foundation
The mission of the Frankie Manning Foundation is to preserve and promote the rich cultural, choreographic and artistic legacy of Frankie Manning and to encourage the world-wide proliferation and promotion of the music and the dance Frankie loved so much (Swing Music and the Lindy Hop).
The Frankie Manning Foundation came into being during the planning stages of the Frankie Manning's 95th Birthday Festival. From the beginning the Festival was set up as a non-profit, all volunteer endeavor with the vision and mission of bringing the global lindy community together, celebrating the life and birthday of Frankie and raising awareness about the Lindy hop and swing music. Early on the Festival's organizers decided that any revenue generated in excess of expenses by the event would go to a restricted fund, housed within the Houston Swing Dance Society, that would be directed by Frankie Manning for the purposes of promoting the Lindy Hop and Swing music around the world.
The intention was to formally unveil the fund to Frankie on the occasion of his 95th Birthday with the hope that at some point in the future the fund would be large enough to spin off on it's own as a stand alone non-profit organization or an endowed foundation.
In the months prior to his death, Frankie learned of and endorsed the plan to establish a fund for Lindy Hop in his name and before he passed away he asked Judy Pritchett, his long time companion, and ChazzYoung, his eldest son, to represent him with regards to all matters relating to the fund.
The Frankie Manning Foundation is a project of the Houston Swing Dance Society (HSDS), a 501 ( c)(3) non profit public charity dedicated to the promotion of swing music and dance in Houston and beyond. Although HSDS has its own board of trustees, the Fund will be directed and governed by a separate and independent advisory board that will be responsible for deciding how the money raised by the Fund will be spent.
The advisory board currently consists of the following three individuals: Chazz Young (Frankie's eldest son), Judy Pritchett (Frankie's long time companion), and Cynthia Millman (Frankie's Biographer). All funds received and disbursed by the Fund will be tracked and accounted for separately from all other programs or activities of the Houston Swing Dance Society.
The Fund will be capitalized by any revenue in excess of expenses generated by the Frankie Manning 95th Birthday Festival and by donations that are made by individuals or organizations interested in contributing to the Fund. Money donated to the Fund is tax deductible. From time to time the Fund will report on it's expenditures to the donors who have donated to the fund or to those who have expressed an interest in receiving updates about the fund.
